The Ace of Diamonds Gang

In short written text, writers often use symbols to represent complex or significant ideas. Analyse how symbols have been used to develop your understanding of people or ideas in atleast to short written texts you have studied.

In the short text “The Ace of Diamonds Gang” by Owen Marshall an important technique the author uses to represent different ideas is symbol. The symbols used are the Ace of Diamonds and the library card. The Ace of Diamond symbolises power and brotherhood while the library card symbolises reality and geekiness.

The Ace of Diamonds is a gang that is made up of adolescents. The Ace of Diamonds card is left behind at every crime scene they leave the card behind to let people know that the crime was caused by the ace of diamonds gang. The boys wear an Ace of Diamonds mask which gives them anonymity and freedom. The gang live in their own fantasy world a member of the gang said “Like wraiths, the Ace of Diamonds Gang.”The Ace of Diamond symbolises power and brotherhood. Together they wear their ace of diamonds mask so they can hide their identity. The masks show that they also have powers just like the heroes of history. The Ace of Diamonds was more than just “an escape from being in a small provincial town”. The gang were like “the heroes of history”. They were wraith like. They used military imagery to describe the junkyard “it reassembled a field hospital in a desperate war of machines”. The Ace of Diamonds helped me understand and shows power and brotherhood and how the gang is a “life warp to escape from being 13 years old in a provincial town,” for the narrator.

The library card represents 13 year olds in a provincial town and the end of boyhood and free imagination it symbolises reality and geekiness. The Library card is accidentally left at the crime scene of Jorgesson’s scrap yard it was mistaken for the Ace of Diamonds card the author mistakenly and blindly pins his library card to Jorgesson’s door at one of their crimes instead of the ace of diamonds. Mr Jorgesson arrived at the narrator’s house with the library card. The narrator pointed the finger at all of his friends.  The power and brotherhood was ended by the ordinary library card.   This showed the end of the Ace of Diamonds Gang “It was the end of free imagination and of boyhood perhaps”. The library card symbolises reality, geekiness and unanonymity. This normality of the gang showed that they weren’t as untouchable and heroic as they once thought they weren’t the “heroes of history”. They were 13 year old boys acting like super heroes carrying around library cards.

To conclude Owen Marshall shows how the Ace of Diamond symbolises power, brotherhood and how the library card symbolises reality and geekiness. Owen Marshall builds on these two ideas by contrasting them.  He builds up the heroic life of the gang with the Ace of Diamonds then brings the gang to a complete end by careless misplacement of a library card.

The Paper Parcel

Analyse how symbols have been used to develop your understanding of people or ides.

In the short story “The Paper Parcel” by Owen Marshall a symbol that helps us understand the ideas is the paper parcel. The paper parcel symbolises the different viewpoints between children and adults and the transience of sexual preferment.

One of the things that the parcel symbolises is the different viewpoints between children and adults. His parents think that going as a paper parcel to the school dance is a great cheap idea. They believe that he will look the best, stand out from the crowd and every will remember his costume. He believes that he will look the worst and shouldn’t go dressed up as a paper parcel “something irrevocable and humiliating”. His parents did not understand the importance of the party they just believed it to be “some kids thing”. This shows the parcel represents the difference in understanding between children and adults.

Another symbol used was the transience of sexual preferment. He hates wearing a paper parcel he believes that it’s a “loss of sexual status”. The girl that asked him to the school dance acted differently around him when he was in the paper parcel “she had a dull expression on her face, as if she was doing me a favour by dancing” she clearly did not want to be around him while he was wearing the paper parcel. This shows the paper parcel has taken away his sexual status and shows him that it was only temporary. It symbolises how quickly sexual status can disappear.

The parcel symbolises different viewpoints between children and adults and the transience of sexual preferment. The boy blames wearing the paper parcel on his parents. He believes that his parents are the real he ended up going as a paper parcel “for the blend incomprehension of the adults and the loss of sexual status”.

In the short text “The Ace of Diamonds Gang” by Owen Marshall an important technique the author uses to represent different ideas is contrast. The contrast used are the Ace of Diamonds and the library card which shows reality. In “The Paper Parcel” the contrast is the view between the mother and the teenagers.
